Passed away on Friday, October 31, 2014 at the age of 81. Verta was born in Kalamazoo on April 22, 1933, the daughter of the late William James and Sarah Rozella Smith James. She worked for Parker Hannifin for over 10 years. She played softball with the Willard Street Gang in her early years. She enjoyed doing ceramics, gardening, camping and square dancing. She also enjoyed music and her favorite musician was Patsy Cline. She was married to Charles Roscoe Barker on August 22, 1950; he preceded her in death on March 28, 2000. She is survived by three children, Beth Peacock, Linda Wayne Davis and Stephen Linda Barker; nine grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Duane James and Jerry Barb James. She was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters, Bill James, Dorothy Boyd and Evelyn Pelton; and one sister-in-law, Frances James. Friends may visit with the family from 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 6, 2014 at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 South Burdick Street, Kalamazoo, MI 49007, where the funeral service will follow at 12:30 p.m. Pastor Jeff Worden will officiate with interment in Ft. Custer National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Salvation Army.
