Tommie Williams, 72, passed away Wednesday evening in Portage. He was born April 1, 1948 in Detroit, MI to the late Eddie and Bessie Mae (Witcher) Williams. Tommie served in the U.S. Army, a Vietnam Veteran, from April of 1965 until honorably discharged in March of 1968. He worked at the VA Medical Center as a recreation therapist and music therapy assistant for more than 20 years. The veterans loved him as he always found a way to include them in music making and other activities. He inspired many to pursue music seriously in their lives. Tommie loved spending time with his grandchildren teaching them how to play music instruments. He also likes to golf and many other different sports. Tommie is survived by his children, D'Artagnan (Latonya Mason) Barnes, Tommie Lee Williams II and Angela Ford; a host of grandchildren; and niece, cousin and other loving friends and relatives. Tommie was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Eddie "Todi" Williams Jr, and Robert Dale Williams; The family will greet friends on Tuesday, September 22nd from 2-5:00pm, at Langeland Family Funeral Homes Burial & Cremation Services, 622 S. Burdick St., Kalamazoo, allowing only 10 people inside at any one time due to COVID-19 restrictions. Interment will be Wednesday, September 23rd at 1:00pm at Ft. Custer National Cemetery. Those wishing to attend should arrive at the cemetery between 12:45-1:00pm.
