HORSFALL, R. Stanley
Of Scotts, MI Stanley died peacefully Thursday morning, January 6, 2011, at Kairos Dwelling in Kalamazoo, MI. He was born November 11, 1916 in Scotts, MI, a son of Walter and E. Maude Gray Horsfall. During WWII, Stanley served as a signalman aboard the United States Coast Guard cutter, the USS Raritan on operations in Greenland. Stanley was a crop and dairy farmer for several years and then turned his focus to custom combine harvesting. He was very meticulous in his care of equipment and land. Stanley washed and waxed his combine, farm equipment and his vehicles on a regular basis. In the 1960s Stanley was recognized for his land conservation techniques. Stanley was well-spoken on any number of subjects. He was an avid reader who, in the course of four years, read over 550 books ranging from the literary classics to poetry to modern fiction and nonfiction. Stanley was also a member of Scotts United Methodist Church. On October 21, 1939, he was united in marriage with the former Arletha A. Gooder, who preceded him in death on March 13, 2002. Stanley was also preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and four sisters. Surviving are: a son, Sidney Suzanne Horsfall of Battle Creek; a daughter, Patty John Nadelin of Avon, IN; seven grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; a brother, Wesley Betty Horsfall of Galesburg; a sister-in-law, Maralyn Sutfin of Climax; and many nieces and nephews. There will be no public viewing or services. Private burial will take place in Boughton Cemetery. Memorials should be directed to Scotts United Methodist Church or to Kairos Dwelling.
