Sophie Mary Fitzsimmons

December 8, 1919 — February 27, 2016

FITZSIMMONS, Sophie Mary
Kalamazoo

Passed away Saturday, February 27, 2016 at the age of 96. She was born December 8, 1919, in Kalamazoo to the late Vaclav and Matilda (Zak) Stozicki. She was united in marriage to Robert W. Fitzsimmons on May 3, 1941. Robert preceded her in death on October 13, 2000. Sophie was a longtime member of St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church. Shut the front door! Shut all the doors and turn off all the lights, save for one small nightlight. But, not before everything is in its place. Sophie, the "Survivor" has been in the "Amazing Race" and she has taken first place. At 10:40pm on February 27, 2016 she joined her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Sophia Mary Stozicki was born to Matilda Zak and Vaclav Stozicki on the Immaculate Conception, December 8, 1919. As Catholics, they believed this was a special honor for ...their beloved and youngest daughter. And as it turned out, not only was it a special honor, but this daughter became the most special person. If you were lucky enough to know her, you know what this means. Whoever you are, and there are many of you, you were loved in the most special way. Sophie was the difference between ordinary and extraordinary, she was the extra effort. Sophie was a realist, her approach to life was pragmatic, and yet from the depths of her she could pull out and use the "Girls just want to have fun" approach to life: she loved to celebrate. She was hard working, precise, intuitive, creative, instructive, and decisive. She decided to be a wife, a mother, a chef, a cake decorator, a person of service, and a liaison to those in need. Her loyalty to God, family, friends, Memorial Day Cemetery planting and Notre Dame had no bounds. Do NOT try to plant Memorial Day plantings later than the week before Memorial Day, we all know this. And make sure the flowers are the same color on each side, and symmetrical: Do not forget. When you go to the mall, park at number 9, when you go anywhere, follow the ways I have taught you. Do not deviate. It was unfathomable to Sophie that anyone would want to do anything other than what she knew was the right way. It was always the right way for her, and it was that way in which we tried to do all things for her because there was no other way.
On Christmas Eve, we eat cabbage rolls and strudel, we eat at 5:00. On Easter we have ham, we eat at 1:00. Do not be late. We all know this. Thank you mom for the wonderful meals, the beautiful presentation of food...for blessing each meal while it cooked, and before we ate. For your particular care of everything you did, because it meant so much to you to bless others. Thank you for being our mom and the best friend anyone could ask for. We have had you so long, we cannot imagine life without you. We cannot mean it more when we say how honored we are to be your children and to love you as we do.
Sophie is survived by her children, Robert S. Fitzsimmons, Charles (Judy) Fitzsimmons, Larry (Susan) Fitzsimmons, Colleen (Jan) Vander Wal and Kathleen (Robert) Shorb; 21 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Sophie was preceded in death by her 7 siblings. Visitation will be held Wednesday, March 2 from 6:00-8:00 at Langeland Portage Chapel.
