Russell passed away on Monday morning, August 24, 2015 at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. He was born on June 28, 1925 in Shelbyville, MI, the son of the late Russell G. and Mildred B. (Snyder) Layton. Russell was a veteran of the United States Army serving during World War II, a survivor of the Battle of the Bulge. On June 10, 1946, he was united in marriage to the former Gwendolyn Price, who passed away on July 3, 1992. Also preceding him in death were his sister, Patricia Layton. Surviving are five children, Ann Redmond of Burton, Linda Copeland of Schoolcraft, Pam (James) Miller of Birch Run, David (Sharon) Layton of Mattawan, and Cindy (Steve) Powell of Shelbyville; 16 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; and special friend, Joyce Shelven of Kalamazoo. Friends may visit with Russell's family from 10:00-11:00 AM on Friday, August 28, at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 S. 9th Street with a service to celebrate Russell's life will at 11:00 AM. Rev. John Hill will officiate. Interment with military honors will follow at Ft. Custer National Cemetery, Augusta. Memorial contributions may be directed to Disabled American Veterans or SPCA of Southwest Michigan.
