Passed away on Monday, December 7, 2015 at the age of 79. Richard was born in Kalamazoo on December 22, 1935, the son of the late LeRoy Gilbert Newton and Winifred (Merreman) Newton. He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was employed by the Gibson Guitar company, where he met his wife, Janice. He retired from the Hercules Company after twenty-four years of service. Among his hobbies, he especially enjoyed golfing, bowling and hunting. Richard was married to Janice Kay (Staley) Newton on December 12, 1965; she survives him. He is also survived by two daughters, Jane Ann (Mark) Ismirle and Patricia Marie (Andrew) Brown; five grandchildren, Danielle (Bridget), Jessica (Robert), Shanon (Ryan), Amber (Trever) and Kaylee (Jason); five great-grandchildren; one brother and one sister, Robert Newton and Winifred Lahue; one step-brother, Louie Irons; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers, Jean Fitzpatrick, Mary Lou McKormick, Donald Newton and LeRoy Newton; and one step-brother, Gordon Irons. Friends may visit with the family 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, December 10th at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick St., Kalamazoo, MI 49007. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, December 11th at the funeral chapel. Rev. Joe Shaler will officiate with interment in Ft. Custer National Cemetery with full military honors.
