Formerly of Kalamazoo Passed away on Monday, May 26, 2014. Age 86. Nicholas was born in Portage on December 3, 1927, the son of the late Peter and Marie Eshuis DeYoung. He served with the United States Navy. He retired from the Upjohn Company. After retiring from Upjohn he enjoyed serving as Head Custodian at Haven Reformed Church, where he was a member. He moved to Texas 13 years ago, where he spent the remainder of his life. Nicholas was a true man of God, who leaves behind a wonderful legacy and he will be greatly missed. He always felt in awe that as an only child God had enriched his life with a wonderful wife, Lois Slater DeYoung; five children and their spouses, Carolyn Steve Santinga of Rockwall, TX, Joyce Don Zudweg of Plainwell, Nick Mary DeYoung of Weaverville, NC, Diane Jim Hendriksen of Garland, TX and Kim Lance Arianna of Rowlett, TX; 28 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Betty Jerry Meijer and Dorothy Dallas Yowler; and several nieces and nephews. Friends may visit with the family from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, May 30, 2014 at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 South 9th Street, Kalamazoo, MI 49009. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 31, 2014 at Haven Reformed Church, 5350 N. Sprinkle Road, Kalamazoo, MI 49004. His grandson, Rev. Nick DeYoung will officiate. Interment will take place later in Ft. Custer National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
