Nancy Jane (Mills) Chitwood

Nancy Jane Chitwood, 75, formerly of Grand Rapids, passed away at her home in Portage on Thursday, December 17, 2020. Born on July 26, 1945 to Leonard and Veta Mills. United in marriage on June 11th, 1966 to the late Byron Delano Chitwood. Survived by son Michael (Dani) Chitwood, daughters in law Kim and Jamie Chitwood and 9 beloved grandchildren. Also survived by siblings; Ann, Jim, Janet (Roger) and Tim (Sharon). Preceded in death by parents Leonard and Veta and husband of 35 years Bryon. Also preceded in death by sons; Dan and David Chitwood as well as her brother-in-law Art O'Dell and her sister-in-law Diane Mills. Nancy faced enormous tragedy with the loss of her husband and two of her three sons, but continued to serve the Lord faithfully through it all. Nancy worked for many years as a home daycare provider, and was a beloved "second mom" to many children including many of her sons' friends as well as her nieces, nephews and grandchildren. She later became a first grade teacher in Forest Hills Public schools where she continued in her loving service of helping children. Nancy's compassion and love for others made her home the safe place for many hurting people. Nancy will be missed dearly in this world but we know that she is rejoicing in Heaven. The family will be holding a small, private memorial service due to the current health restrictions. In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to one of Nancy's favorite charities.
