Kalamazoo, MI Passed away on Thursday, April 17, 2014 at Bronson Methodist Hospital. Age 86. Mary Jo was born in Minneapolis, MN on October 16, 1927, the daughter of the late Hans and Ida Halvorsen Helmerson. She attended Gustavus Adolphus College, where she belonged to the Alpha Phi Sorority. She was married to Dr. James Breneman in 1946; he survives her. She served as office manager of Suburban Medical Center for many years. She belonged to Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church. She served as Past President of the Kalamazoo Academy of Medicine Auxiliary and Past Vice-Chairman of the Kalamazoo Republican Party. She belonged to the Michigan State Medical Society Auxiliary, American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology Auxiliary, Borgess Service League, the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra League and the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts. Surviving besides her husband are one son and one daughter, Lisa Peter Reed of Kalamazoo and C.J. Breneman of Kalamazoo; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son, Grant Wayne Breneman; three brothers and two sisters. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Mary Jo's life will be held at a date and time to be announced later. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the Kalamazoo Gospel Mission.
