Walden, Marguerite "Peggy" Estelle 12/22/1932 - 1/3/2021 San Rafael, CA. A Homegoing Celebration Service will be held at 10:00am on Saturday, August 14th at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes. A light reception will follow the service. Peggy was born on December 22, 1932, in Kalamazoo, MI. She peacefully passed away on January 3, 2021, at the age of 88 in San Rafael, CA, with her children by her side. Peggy was the eldest daughter of Edith Mae (Connor) and Valentine David Hackley, both of whom preceded her in death. Peggy is survived by her ex-husband of 27 years and dear friend, Harold William Walden. Peggy spent the majority of her life in Kalamazoo, MI, where she graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School in 1950. Peggy and Harold married in 1951 and together they had six children: Narada Michael (wife, Katie); Ronald (partner, Kelly); Kevin; Christopher (wife, Annette); Yolanda (husband, Tory); Edie (husband, Alan). Peggy is preceded in death by her son, Ronald. Peggy enjoyed being a mother. She had a gift for guiding, nurturing, and encouraging her children to fulfill their dreams, not the dreams of others. She demonstrated the importance of showing up, working hard, doing your best, and, being kind to others in the process. She often said that parenting her children was her "life's greatest accomplishment." As the eldest of her five siblings, Peggy was the matriarch, confidant, and close friend to all of her family members. Peggy never missed an opportunity to celebrate life's big and small moments, even after she moved to California. Peggy always looked forward to her yearly gathering with The Eagle Lake Ladies who remained her dearest friends throughout her life, along with her Chicago girlfriends. Peggy was employed by Sears Roebuck & Co. and The Upjohn Co. until retirement. Known for her commitment to hard work, unwavering optimism and loyalty to others, Peggy was respected and admired by all that knew her. Peggy relocated to Greenbrae, CA, in 1985, and spent the remainder of her days there with her children and grandchildren. One of Peggy's dreams was fulfilled when she lived long enough to see the inauguration of the first African-American President, Barack Obama. This dream was transcended years later when she had an opportunity to meet President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama as her first born son, Narada Michael Walden, performed for them with BB King at the White House. Peggy is survived by four of her five siblings: Mary Mitchell; Vicki Fischer (husband, Nolan); Valerie Whiteside (husband, Earl); Travis Hackley (partner, Brenda). Peggy is preceded in death by her brother, Edgar Hackley (wife, Gwen); and brother-in-law, Mitch Mitchell. Peggy is survived by eleven grandchildren: Krishana Walden; Christopher Walden (wife, Monica); Melissa Wheeler (husband, Christopher); Wesley Walden; Rebecca Turrietta (husband, Michael); Jamison Williams; Marguerite Walden-Kaufman; Alex Walden-Kaufman; Kelly Walden; Kayla Walden; Michael Walden: fifteen great grandchildren; Anthony Walden, Aniya Anderson, Aliyah Anderson, Jamon Rhea, Nevaeh Walden, Christopher Walden, Tiana Walden, Christian Walden, Cashis Walden, Ezekial Wheeler, Bethany Wheeler, Aurora Wheeler, Michael Turrietta; Jordan Turrietta; Noah Turrietta. Peggy is preceded in death by one great grandchild, Anthony Walden. Peggy is also survived and deeply loved by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Peggy moved through the world with grace and radiated love. She will be deeply missed. Langeland Funeral Homes 3926 South 9th Street Kalamazoo, MI 49009 https://www.langelands.com
