METHENY, Katherine T. "Kate"
Portage Katherine passed away, at the age of 32, on Tuesday, April 28, 2015, after a long battle with cancer. She was born on September 3, 1982 to Robert and Marguerite Agase Higgins. She was united in marriage to Mark Metheny on August 25, 2012. Katie attended Portage Public Schools from kindergarten through her graduation from Portage Central High School in 2000. She was the student who was often paired by teachers with the students who were struggling socially, emotionally, or simply needed a friend. Kate never met a person she wasn't willing to help. She was accepting of everyone she met and was loved by all. Her caring ways continued into her choice of employment. Katie worked at 2 different day care facilities where she showered the children with love and guidance and support. She worked at a nursing home, did home care for the handicapped and elderly, and was working for Residential Opportunities Incorporated in a group home when she was first diagnosed with cancer. After her treatments, she returned there and continued to show the residence the love, support, and care they deserved and she was so good at providing. Kate loved family! She never passed up an opportunity to be with her grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. The smile she brought to everyone's faces was contagious. Katie will be missed terribly, but the lessons of acceptance, love, and care for others that she taught those around her will live on forever in our hearts. Kate is survived by her husband, Mark Metheny; parents, Bob and Maggie Higgins; son, Anthony Jones III; brother, David Higgins; grandmothers, Eileen Agase and Helen Higgins; and extended family members. She was proceded in death by her baby twin brothers, Christopher and Corey Higgins; and her grandfathers, Lou Agase and Robert Higgins. A private interment will be in Mt. Ever-Rest Memorial Park South. A memorial service for Kate will be held at Portage United Church of Christ on Tuesday, May 12, 2015 at 4:00 P.M. Arrangements at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 E. Centre Ave. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Kate's memory may be made to Kalamazoo Loaves and Fishes, 901 Portage Street Kalamazoo, MI 49001-3005.
