HORTON, Mr. Jonathan "Kirk"
Kalamazoo, MI Passed away on March 21, 2014 after a short battle with cancer. He was born in Battle Creek, Michigan on July 27, 1949 to Robert and Betty Funk Horton and graduated from Coldwater High School in 1967. Kirk graduated from Western Michigan University in 1970 with a degree in Special Education of the Visually Impaired and later earned his Master's Degree in Orientation and Mobility from WMU. Following college, Kirk served in the U.S. Peace Corps as a teacher for the Blind in both Thailand and Ecuador. Early in his career, he also taught at the Wisconsin School for the Blind, the Illinois Visually Handicapped Institute and the Rochester, New York Public School District. Kirk eventually was employed by Helen Keller International as Educational Consultant for Indonesia and as Thailand Country Director. From 1990 until his retirement in 2010, Kirk worked for the Hilton/Perkins International Program as Asia/Pacific Regional Consultant. In this capacity, he developed training programs and provided technical support for deaf/blind persons in Thailand, Malaysia, India, Nepal, Indonesia, China, Hong Kong, Viet Nam and the Philippines. Kirk was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Gregory and Jeffrey and many other relatives. He is survived by brother Robert Horton Lynn; step-brother Walter Johnson Linda; step-sister, Ruth Smoker; sister in law, Ann Horton and nieces, Wendy Horton Bierema Bryon, Christine Horton David Mitchell, Sarah Belmore Scott, Addie Horton, Joann Blair, Jane Ray, Violet Humphreys and Zoe Bierema. He is also survived by nephews Greg Horton, JJ Belmore, Jon Johnson, Todd Johnson: good friend Marty McGee and many close friends from his adopted country of Thailand. Private services and the scattering of Kirk's ashes will take place at a future date in Michigan, Florida and Thailand. There will be no visitation.
