NORTHROP, John T., Jr.
Jackson, MI John passed away, surrounded by his family, at Beaumont Hospital, Troy, MI, on Monday, July 13, 2015 at the age of 64. He was born August 11, 1950, in Kalamazoo, to John T. and Dorothy Coash Northrop. After graduating Portage Northern High School, John served in the U.S. Air Force at bases in Texas and Arizona, and later attended Pima College in Tucson, AZ. Following his military service and college, John moved back to Kalamazoo, where he was employed for a number of years at Stewart and Clarke Furniture. On July 20, 1976 John married Laurie Thompson Howe. Later in life, John started his own business focusing on Hospitality Design, renovating hotels and motels throughout the Midwest. John is survived by his children, John T. Northrop, III, his wife Rachel and their son John, of Kalamazoo, Russ Northrop, his daughters, Ava and Eve, of Indianapolis, IN and Julie Northrop, and her husband Ian MacDonald, of Kalamazoo, his mother, Dorothy Coash Levene, of College Station, TX; siblings, Joe Northrop, of College Station, TX, Dr. Paula Bolder and her husband, Arthur, of Ann Arbor, MI, and Annie Mason, and her husband, Mark, of College Station, TX; many nieces and nephews, and his beloved dog, Rocky. John was preceded in death by his father, John T. Northrop, Sr. The family will greet friends on Thursday, July 16, 2015 from 5-7 PM Rosary at 6:30, at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 East Centre Ave. A Mass of Christian burial will take place Friday, July 17, 2015, 10:00 AM at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Ft. Custer National Cemetery. Friends are invited to a reception at 2 PM, at Latitude 42 Brewing Company, 7842 Portage Road, Portage. Memorials may be directed to Adopt a Refugee Family adoptarefugeefamily.org.
