WATSON, JoAn
Kalamazoo
With the passing away of JoAn Watson on January 8, 2017 there is a great loss and deep sorrow in our neighborhood. JoAn lived here for 57 years and was never well any of that time but one would never have known that because she always had a smile and a word of cheer for all who met her. With her quick wit she could usually manage to make you laugh. She always said "A day on which you did not laugh was a day lost." JoAn was born April 15, 1928 in Detroit Michigan, daughter of Walter and Frances Watson. She lived in Detroit until the family moved to East Dayton Michigan in 1947. After graduating from high school JoAn assisted in the family business in East Dayton. She moved to Kalamazoo Michigan in 1949 where she also assisted in the family business until 1956. JoAn was one of the first female mechanics in Kalamazoo. In 1956 she moved to Mill Valley California and lived there until she became ill and returned to Kalamazoo in 1960. JoAn was very talented and could do many things. She was a wonderfully talented artist. When a child needed his bicycle fixed her willing hands did it. She loved children, animals and birds. She tended many sick and injured birds until they were well and fed hundreds of birds every year. The children of the neighborhood called her " Doc Watson". She built dog houses and gave them to some poor dog that had none and was left out in the cold. She kept little for herself, gave to others, and could sense what one would like or need. Joan wasn't a member or any church but if one looked at her Bible, one she had had since childhood, you would see many verses underlined and know her Book was well read. She lived by the teachings day by day as witnessed by her generosity, kindness, and compassion. If the world had more people in it like JoAn it would be a wonderful place in which to live. Her years of struggle with illness are finally over. JoAn leaves behind so many friends and two special cousins, Connie Millirom and Ardith Jackson. Walk on dear friend, we will miss your smile and loving embrace.
