Portage On Thursday, August 4, 2011, Janie Belle Conner was called home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She was born August 30, 1928 in Preston, MD, the daughter of Roy and Esther Gardner Bowman and had been a resident of the Portage area for many years. She was a member of Berean Baptist Church, loved crocheting and other needle crafts. She worked for over 20 years in the health care field as an LPN for a dermatologist, an internist, and at William Beaumont Hospital. The cornerstones of her life were her Faith and her Family. On May 8, 1947, she married Francis Conner, who survives. Also surviving are their children, Susan Eric Smith of Portage and Gordon Josselyn Conner of Vancouver, BC; 8 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Grace Bowman of Denton, MD; nieces and nephews. Janie was preceded in death by her parents; brother, R. Carter Bowman; and a sister, E. Louise Johnstone. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 11, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at the Berean Baptist Church, 7813 S. 12th Street, with her son, Pastor Gordon Conner officiating. Interment will take place at Ft. Custer National Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, on Wednesday from 4-7 PM.
