Died in Kalamazoo, MI on August 30, 2019 from Frontotemporal Dementia. He was born on May 10, 1952 in Kalamazoo, the son of John A. Copps and Ruth A. (Harriman) (Copps) Pino. He was preceded in death by his twin brother, Robert; and his parents. As a young man, Jim enjoyed outdoor activities, wading in creeks and ponds catching snakes, frogs and turtles. He loved to read and share what he learned. During adolescence Jim suffered mental illness which affected him the rest of his life. His illness impaired his communication abilities but he would still share profound insights about a wide variety of topics.
Jim was an ardent admirer of Bobby Kennedy believing to the end that Kennedy's message was one that would help change the face of the world. Jim was a skilled water color artist, painting many pictures with expressive feeling. He also loved a broad variety of music.
Jim's faith was important to him to the very end. His love of God and relationship with Jesus were fundamental to his core beliefs and a guide for living. Jim had a heart of gold loving his family and friends who will certainly miss him.
A memorial service will be held at the Kalamazoo Friends Meetinghouse, 508 Denner St. in Kalamazoo on Saturday, November 16, 2019 at 2:00pm. To view Jim's personalized guestbook please visit
