STURKIN, Harold M.
of Kalamazoo Passed away August 20, 2010 at the 10th "T" of Ridgeview Golf Course. He was born October 16, 1926 in Benton Harbor, MI the son, to the late Robert and Genevieve Myers Sturkin. Harold married Evelyn Studeman, August 20, 1955; whom survives. He graduated from Benton Harbor High School with the class of 1945. He enlisted into the Navy Air Corps during WWII in 1945, attending the Aviation Mechanics school in Norman, OK, then on to gunnery school. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He moved to Kalamazoo in November of 1954, going to work for the CPA firm of Lawrence Scudder, leaving on December 31st of 1959 to work for the Kalamazoo Public Schools in the business office as the accountant starting January 2, 1960. He retired from Kalamazoo Schools, December 31, 1988 as assistant business manager. He enjoyed his retirement going to Florida and playing golf. Harold was active in a number of local organizations including: the Educational Community Credit Union Board where he was awarded with the James E. Fetterolf Distinguished Service Award, Jack Hamilton Fund, Westside Lion's Club president, Immanuel Lutheran Church treasurer, United Way treasurer, National Accounts Association and American Legion. He was also a life time member of the St. Joe's Elk's Club. Harold played on the Benton Harbor 1945 State Basketball Championship team and continued his avid interest in sports throughout his life by being a Cubs, White Sox and Bears fan. Harold was the father of Linda Sturkin of Kalamazoo and Shirley Ed Tomaszczyk of Hartland, MI. Family will greet friends, Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8:00 o'clock at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick St. A private graveside service will take place at Grand Prairie Cemetery. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be directed to the Special Olympics, Kalamazoo County, 4024 Student Recreation Center, Attention: Chris Maynard of the WMU Campus or to Community Advocates for Persons with Developmental Disabilities, 814 S. Westnedge Ave, Kalamazoo, MI 49008.
