George W. Alderman

d. June 19, 2014

George W. Alderman, age 76, passed away Thursday morning, June 19, 2014 at his home. He was born in Quincy, IL, the eldest son of the late Augustus and Alice Heath Alderman. Prior to starting a family he served proudly in the United States Navy for 8 years. He was employed by American Can Co. and US Can Co. for over 40 years until his retirement. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends at the family cottage on Christie Lake in Lawrence, Michigan. His favorite activities included the enjoyment of fine foods, fishing and camping with family, hunting with his son and friends, woodworking, gardening, traveling to historic sites around the country and visiting most of the lighthouses on the Great Lakes. He was very talented and would succeed at any project or repair that arose. Christmas was an extra special time for George. Like any kid he could hardly wait to give his gifts. George was a very loving husband and father. He is survived by his wife, Mary Jean Stephan whom he married on June 25, 1960. Also surviving are their two children, Darlene Charles Blascoe and Aaron Connie Eayrs Alderman; two grandchildren, John and Danielle Blascoe; two sisters, Peggy James Fetrow and Martha Robert Whitesides Cochrane; brother, Ralph Kathy Alderman; and many nieces and nephews. A gathering to celebrate his life is being planned for later this summer. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in George's memory to the Inn at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park in Glen Haven, Michigan, an Inn once operated by his grandmother's family. Send Memorials to the National Park Service, 9922 Front Street, Empire, Michigan, 49630, with a memo indicating it is for Sleeping Bear Inn restoration.
