Frederick J. Van Walbeck

Passed away Sunday morning, August 19, 2018 at his home. Frederick was born June 25, 1932 in Kalamazoo the son of the late Gerhardus and Elizabeth (VanBoven) Van Walbeck and had been a lifelong resident in the Kalamazoo and Portage area. He was a veteran serving in the U.S. Navy. He was employed for over 30 years with the Upjohn Company until his retirement. In his earlier years he enjoyed playing softball and basketball. He also enjoyed watching all sports and especially watching his grandson Brandon race. In September of 1956 Frederick was united in marriage to his loving wife Sharon (Schaffer), who preceded him in death on May 19, 2010. He was also preceded in death by his grandson Brandon Van Walbeck; an infant grandson, Chad Van Walbeck; and a sister, Agatha "Agie" Kuiper. He is survived by his sons, Mark (Audrey) Van Walbeck, Craig (Patti) Van Walbeck; grand-daughter, Aimee Van Walbeck; sisters and brother, Joanne Schuring, Gerald (Carol) Van Walbeck, Marie Johnson, Claudia Alphenaar; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 1:00pm Saturday, August 25 at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 E. Centre. Friends may meet the family Saturday from 12:00-1:00pm prior to the service. Private interment will be in Mt. Ever-Rest Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Wounded Warrior Project or Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan.
