Passed away on Saturday, April 16, 2016 at the age of 61. Franklin was born in Bay City, MI on August 10, 1954, the son of the late Franklin James Byron Sr. and Evelyn I. (Taylor) Byron. He served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He retired from the United States Postal Service after twenty-two years of service and also worked for the Department of Veterans Affairs. He taught English and Theology at Western Michigan University and Kalamazoo Valley Community College. He belonged to Kalamazoo Missionary Church, where he served with the "Forgotten Man Ministries". He volunteered with the Disabled American Veterans and the American Red Cross. He also assisted the Northern Lights Church of God with the publishing of their newsletter. Franklin is survived by his loving wife of 19 years, Winifred K. (Newton) Byron; one daughter, Leilani Byron; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He also leaves behind his beloved pets, Riley and Thomas. Friends may visit with the family from 3 - 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 21st at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick St. The funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, April 22nd at the funeral chapel, with Pastor Ken Smeader officiating. The graveside service with full military honors will take place at 2:30 p.m. on Friday at Ft. Custer National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to Disabled American Veterans.
