GERNAAT, Evelyn (Veldkamp)
Kalamazoo, Michigan
While surrounded by her loving family, Evelyn Gernaat went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, June 17, 2020. Lynn was born to Jacobus and Grace (Greendyke) Veldkamp on July 21, 1930 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. On November 4, 1949, Lynn married her soul mate, John Gernaat, Jr. Lynn was a lifelong resident of Kalamazoo where spanning over 60 years she assisted John with the family business of farming celery, hot house tomatoes, and bedding plants. John and Lynn were especially known for their beautiful tomato plants they tended to every spring and graciously shared with family and friends.
Lynn graduated from the Christian schools and was a longtime member of Second Christian Reformed Church where she participated in several church activities throughout the years. However, Lynn's greatest accomplishment was her role of being a loving wife and nurturing mother. John and Lynn were married for 70 blessed years. Their marriage was the epitome of a loving, Christ-centered marriage. Lynn was a warrior of prayer for everyone, especially her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and their many friends. John and Lynn were Christian role models to all who had the pleasure of knowing them.
John Gernaat went to be with the Lord on March 25th, 2020. Lynn was also preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, and five sisters. Surviving are five children: Dennis (Shirlee) Gernaat, Carol (Dan) Hazelhoff, Brenda Gernaat, Christopher (Brenda) Gernaat, and Julie (Mark) VanDyken. As well as 15 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A Celebration of Life Service for John & Evelyn will be held on Wednesday, October 7, 2020 at Second Christian Reformed Church, 3015 Nichols Road. The family will greet friends from 1:00 to 2:00pm with the service to begin at 2:00pm with Pastor Fred DeYoung officiating.
