HAAN, Mr. Dow R., Sr.
Kalamazoo, Michigan Dow died Sunday morning, April 19, 2009, at Rose Arbor Hospice Residence in Kalamazoo, MI. He was born March 26, 1913, in Chicago, IL, a son of Rev. Gerrit and Anna Drukker Haan and had been a life long Kalamazoo area resident. In 1938 Dow started the Dow R. Haan Insurance Agency. His sons joined him in the business and Dow retired in 1985. Dow was a former member of First Christian Reformed Church and Second Christian Reformed Church. Dow was instrumental in establishing Covenant United Reformed Church and became a founding member in 1993. He served as a board member of the Kalamazoo Christian Schools and the National Union of Christian Schools. Dow was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Dow R. Haan, Jr., four brothers and one sister. On May 28, 1940, he was united in marriage with the former Elizabeth H. VanEck, who survives. Also surviving are: a daughter, Ann Barthelmess of Carlsbad, CA; a son, Kenneth L. Mary Jane Haan of Kalamazoo; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Haan; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 2-4 & 6-8pm at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 South 9th St. Services will be held 11:00 Thursday morning at Covenant United Reformed Church, 3724 Lovers Lane, with the Rev. Wybren Oord, officiating. Private interment in Riverside Cemetery will follow services.
