Went home to be with his Lord on Thursday, April 2, 2009. Don was born January 15, 1938, Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, the son of the late Carroll and Catherine Mentzer Smith. Raised in Gettysburg, PA, Don developed a love for sports, especially golf, football and baseball which he still enjoyed watching on TV. Throughout the years he was a true nature lover and developed a love for animals especially dogs. Don worked in the corrugated box business for 35 years, and retired from Union Camp in 1995 as General Manager. He was a member of the First Reformed Church of Portage since 1977, where he was active in consistory, served on many committees and had taught Sunday School. Don was very active man through the years but the most important part of his life was his family. On November 25, 1956, he was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart Phyllis Cleveland Smith. Surviving in addition to his wife, Phyllis are their four children, Keith Fran Smith of South Haven, Sharon Schnake of Kalamazoo, Jeffrey Lisa Smith of Paw Paw and Vicky Kevin Canney of Portage; grandchildren, Jason and Eric Smith, Nick and Michelle Schnake, Katie and Karmen Canney, Kara and Matthew Smith; great-grandchildren, Kobi and Payton Smith; a brother, Carroll Carol Smith of Gettysburg, PA. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2-5pm at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 E. Centre Ave. Funeral Service will be held 11:00am Monday at the First Reformed Church of Portage 7905 S. Westnedge. Following services Don will be taken to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania for graveside services.
