LANGELAND (Colvin), Deborah Lee

Taken from us suddenly on October 31, 2015, at the age of 60. The memory of her pure joy in living and delight everyday will sustain her grieving family and friends.

Deb was born in 1955, the 6th child of the late Robert Colvin and Ruth Colvin, who survives. She was preceded in death by her brother Robert (Patricia) Colvin and Marc (Deanna) Colvin and is survived by her siblings Phyllis Ehrnstrom, Sharon (William) Fike, Al (Madalyn) Colvin, Gordon (Jan) Colvin, and Dana Colvin.

After graduating from Loy Norrix High School, Deb started working at Bronson Methodist Hospital. In 1979, Deb met a curious fellow named Stephen L. Langeland. Not entirely sure if it was a good idea, she eventually agreed to go on a date with him. As it turned out they learned they had many common interests- a love of the outdoors: hiking, camping, cross country skiing, canoeing, bird watching, or gardening. They also shared a love of trips to Northern Michigan at any time of the year. Most of all they shared the love of family and children.

Deb and Steve were married in 1981. They were blessed with the arrivals of their two children, Joshua Lee Langeland and Aubrey Leigh Langeland. Together they raised their children and instilled in them their love of the natural world. They enjoyed many outdoor adventures, especially their many trips to Mexico, Central America, and many spots in the Caribbean. Always proud of her children's accomplishments, Deb was especially proud that both her children are currently working toward a PhD in their respective fields. A loving mother, Deb's children found in her a confidant, a best friend, and a sense of home.

Not caring too much for housework, Deb made up for it in her love of gardening and landscaping. She truly had a green thumb and she thrived on the ability to create beauty in her yard. Her flower beds containers and gardens were legendary. She always preferred to be outdoors, whether in her yard, at the family's 80 acres of woods known as Area 51, at her lovely 15 acre meadow La Niado, or at her parents' home on Lake Gitchegumee.

She also had a fondness for animals. Recently she lost her two devoted dogs Raskal and Murphy, but found solace in the company of her cats, Chico, Gretchen, and Little Girl.

Deb was very outgoing and made friends easily. Anyone who met her was captivated by her incredible smile, sense of humor, and her genuine interest in their lives. She was a beautiful person with an enormous heart. She leaves behind her incredibly loving in-laws, Peggy (Jeff) Landon, Jane (Ken) Schroder, and Jim (Jennifer) Langeland as well as many other family members and friends who are struggling to deal with this unfathomable loss.

Special thanks are given to Oshtemo Township Fire Department, LifeEMS, and Borgess Trauma Unit for their valiant attempts to save Deb.

Cremation has taken place. Please gather with family and friends at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 South 9th St. Kalamazoo, MI 49009 on November 13, 2015, at 11:00 AM to gather in her memory. A short Memorial Service will begin at 12:30 PM followed by a light lunch.

Contributions can be made in Deb's name to the Kalamazoo Nature Center, Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy, or the Humane Society.
