Portage Betty passed away on Saturday evening, June 28, 2014 at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo. She was born on June 22, 1924 in Kalamazoo, the youngest of five children to Fenno and Dena Blink DeVries. On May 28, 1948, Betty was united in marriage to Robert V. Nicol. She was employed by Portage Public Schools for 5 years as a music teacher and later employed by The Upjohn Company as an executive secretary for over 15 years until her retirement. She was a longtime member of Trinity Reformed Church. Surviving are her two children, Robert Sue Nicol of Kalamazoo and Leigh Nicol of Portage; one grandson, Rob Laura Nicol of Fennville; great-grandson, Owen Nicol; and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her husband of 61 years, Robert Nicol on February 9, 2010; her parents; three sisters, Jenny McCrumb, Henrietta DeVries and Dorothy Bull; and brother, Bert DeVries. A visitation for Betty will be from 2:00pm-5:00pm on Sunday, July 6, at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 E. Centre Avenue. A private family interment will be in Mt. Ever-Rest Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be directed to Trinity Reformed Church.
