Passed away on Saturday, April 8, 2017. Age 87. Betty was born in Lima, Ohio on September 25, 1929, the daughter of the late John Huston and Edith (Kirkpatrick) Huston. She attended Western Michigan University, receiving her Bachelors Degree in Social Work in 1966. She then began working for Family and Children's Services. She served with the committee that was instrumental in bringing hospice to Kalamazoo and was one of hospice's first volunteers. She also co-owned Dougherty's Corners Market and Cooper Apartments. She loved to sew and quilt and was a member of the Log Cabin Quilters. Betty is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, Jack L. Duke; children, Kathryn (Larry) Johnston and Leonard (Katie) Duke; grandchildren, Lisa Lefanty Haughey, Nicole (David) Fix, James (Ashley) Duke, Jesse (Katie) Duke and Hannah Duke; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Lou Hagelgans; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 15th at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick St., with Rev. James Dyke officiating. Friends may visit with the family at the funeral chapel from 12 p.m. until time of the service. Memorial contributions may be given to Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan, envelopes will be provided at the funeral home.
