VERDRIES, William R. "Bill"
Age 90
Of Kalamazoo Bill passed away Sunday morning, November 23, 2008 at his residence. He was born June 26, 1918 in Kalamazoo, the son of William and Mary DeHaan Verdries. A 1936 graduate of Kalamazoo Central High School, Bill began his career with Bell Telephone in 1938. Drafted into the U.S. Army in 1940, he served as a pilot and artillery commander. Bill remained in the Army reserve as a Lieutenant Coronal until 1969. Returning to Bell Telephone in 1946, he enrolled at Western Michigan University receiving a B.S. in 1962. After 47 years with the phone company, Bill worked at the Milham Park Golf Course for 14 years. Preceding him in death are his wife, Dorothy Jane Schweitzer, and son William Verdries. Surviving are a son Timothy Verdries of Parchment and a daughter Kathryn Verdries of Indianapolis. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, December 5, at Saint Luke's Episcopal Church, 247 Lovell Street.
