William “Bill” F. Lesterhouse, 89, of Mattawan, passed away peacefully at The Upjohn Rehabilitation Center on January 7, 2025. He was born in Kalamazoo on July 28, 1935, to William and Cora (Marston) Lesterhouse.
Bill graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School and worked for several local businesses while his interest and love for antiques grew. Bill started his first antique shop in his parents’ garage, then moved to Mattawan, Michigan in 1969 where he welcomed customers to William Lesterhouse Antiques for over 50 years. His favorite period was 18th century antiques, but his knowledge of both the history and origin of a wide breadth of period craftsmanship made his shop a destination for those from near and afar, who traveled to Bill’s to search for items to decorate their homes and businesses.
Bill was also considered an expert appraiser, and was host to the local equivalent of antique road show events.
Bill loved to entertain, and for years hosted a Friday night potluck where anyone was welcome to gather for a meal. While Bill enjoyed the beauty and history of his antique collection, his most valuable collection remained friends with whom he enjoyed lifelong friendships. Many will miss his humor, storytelling, and endless generosity.
He is survived by his sister Linda Boven, nieces Joyce (Brad) Olson and Christine Scheller, beloved great nieces and nephews and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Cora Allred.
Bill will be laid to rest during a private family gathering at Grand Prairie Cemetery. Those who wish to make a gift in Bill’s name may direct donations to Elara Caring Hospice.
