William DeHaan

October 15, 1923 — September 19, 2010

DeHaan, William "Bill"
of Portage Passed away September 19, 2010 at Bickford Cottage. He was born October 15, 1923 in Kalamazoo, to the late Hildebrand and Tina Kuilema DeHaan. Bill was united in marriage to Alice Newhouse on January 24, 1947, who preceded him in death in 2004. Upon graduating from high school, Bill enlisted into the U.S. Marine Corps where he served during WWII until honorably discharged. He was employed with Illinois Envelope as printer and printer supervisor, for over 40 years until he retired. Bill enjoyed the out-of-doors as evidenced by his many camping trips with his family when the children were young. In his later years, he enjoyed his trips to the dude ranch in the fall to see the colors and enjoy the comradery of friends and family. His favorite napping spot was in the sun next to his gardens by the side of his house. His bird feeder was always full and the squirrels always had an ear of corn. His biggest thrill was having neighborhood families and friends stop in and say hello and receiving pictures of his great-grandchildren from California. Surviving Bill are his children, Kathy Charles Boyer of Kalamazoo and Debra Dale Fink of Scotts; 6 grandchildren, Brent, Greg, Kelly, Jennifer, Brandi and Todd; 2 great grandchildren, Dustin and Cailin; brother, Jake Maude DeHaan; and many nieces and nephews. Also preceding Bill in death was a son, David DeHaan; brothers, Pete and Nick DeHaan; and sister, Dena DeMoore. Family will greet friends on Wednesday from 6-8:00 o'clock at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick St., where services will take place on Thursday, 11:00 o'clock. Burial will follow at Mt. Ever-Rest Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Bickford Cottage or Hospice of Southwest Michigan.
