of Kalamazoo, Michigan Ward passed away early Thursday morning, July 25, 2013 at his home. He was born August 28, 1953 in Wayne, MI, the son of Joseph and Joyce Elliott Squires. On May 9, 1992, he was united in marriage to the former Henrietta Witzak in Ann Arbor. Ward was a graduate of the University of Michigan earning a Master's Degree in Architecture. Surviving are his adoring wife of 21 years, Henrietta Squires; his adoring son, Shawn Rebekah Patrick of Warren, MI; adoring adopted daughter, Jamie Hopkins of Kalamazoo; two adoring grandchildren, Grace and Ethan Patrick; mother, Joyce Squires of Oakland, CA; sister, Lee "Leela" Willow of Oakland, CA; and many adoring nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Preceding him in death was his father. Ward's primary passion was as husband, father, grandfather, uncle, lover of his family and his friends. Ward is a passionate worshipper of His Lord & Savior Jesus Christ, loving to also serve Him through the Rock church, hosting a small home group including children, former host home of interns, including his delight of co-cheffing Friday night dinners for all interns and mentoring youth at every opportunity. Ward was a leader in A.D.A.P.T Americans with Disabilities for Attendant Programs Today community organizing bi-annual acts of disobedience risking arrests in order to free persons with disabilities from institutions advocating for personal freedom & choice. Ward's additional passion and avocation was as landscape architect creating natural settings to support wildlife & people, stewarding outdoor resources resulting in a "bumper crop" of chipmunks, frogs, wild turkeys and deer for all to enjoy God's creations. Funeral services will be at 11:00 on Monday, July 29 at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 S. 9th Street, Kalamazoo, MI 49009. Friends may visit with the family from 2:00-8:00 on Sunday, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be directed to Jerusalem Prayer Team or The Rock.
