McWhorter, Walter J. Walter J. McWhorter died June 15, 2008 at Bronson Methodist Hospital. Born October 4, 1913 in Nashville, Tennessee, the son of Charles and Jessie Bunch McWhorter. Came to Kalamazoo in the early 1930's to work at the Kalamazoo Stove Co., subsequently worked at the Home Furnishing Co., Ingersoll's, Large Furniture Co. and for over 30 years, at Vermeulen Furniture Co., retiring in 1978. Married Ruth Holmes McWhorter in 1936, who predeceased him in December, 1999. They have two children, Robert McWhorter and Kathyrn McWhorter Gerts, six grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. He has one living sibling, Charles McWhorter, who resides in Florida. A member of the First Congregational Church for nearly 30 years. In 1978, moved to Wellington, Florida, returning to Michigan in 1997. In 1960, he helped to start Phi Sigma Kappa at Western Michigan University and functioned as its advisor, counselor and benefactor until 1971. His friends and family will gather at Mount Everest Chapel, 3941 S. Westnedge, where a service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 18, 2008, with interment to follow. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
