Virendra K. Sood

Beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend to so many. Loved for his gentle spirit, kindness, and genuine ability to connect with virtually everyone he met, Virendra Sood passed away Tuesday evening, February 6, 2024, at his home. Virendra was born on July 11, 1943 in Bahjoi, India to parents Naubat Rai and Shakuntala Devi Sood. 

On December 13, 1968, he was united in marriage to his loving wife Vijay Sud. They enjoyed a long and adventurous marriage of 55 years. 

Virendra earned his Master’s Degree in Chemistry at Western Michigan University in 1972, and then proudly spent his entire 32-year career working for The Upjohn Company (later Pharmacia, then Pfizer) as a Biochemist in the Research and Development Division. He cherished his work and his colleagues, and never hesitated to share a story or two about the interesting projects he was passionately working on. 

Virendra was able to enjoy his retirement to the fullest, traveling to bucket-list places including Alaska, Tibet, and exploring more corners of his native India. He cherished learning about new cultures, learning history, and meeting new friends each place he traveled. He had a unique way of befriending strangers. 

Virendra’s greatest pleasure and source of pride was his loving family, always seeking to ensure his daughters and wife were cared for, loved, and supported. He prioritized their needs over his own because he told everyone it brought him the most joy. He deeply cherished his role as grandfather, and spent hours outside or watching Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune with his granddaughters. 

Virendra is survived by his wife, Vijay; his daughters, Sandhya Sood and Anu (Anna) Allington; his grandchildren, Julia, Claire, Liam, Adeline, and Avianna; his siblings in India; several nieces and nephews; and his strong and loving network of friends, who were family to him. 

Loved ones may meet the family from 11:00am-1:00pm on Saturday, February 10, 2024, at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, 3926 South 9^th St. Kalamazoo, MI 49009.
