DE YOUNG, Violet P.
of Portage Went peacefully home to her Lord on December 14, 2011 and is with her beloved family awaiting her at heaven's gate. Violet was born August 26, 1922 in Kalamazoo, MI, a daughter of John and Thelma Surdick Pelikan, Sr. and was a lifelong resident. She married Jacob De Young on April 14, 1941. They enjoyed travel, gardening, family gatherings and time spent with grandchildren. They were happily married for 57 years. Violet was a long time member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. She volunteered with the Helen Coover Center knitting hats for infants at the hospitals and also at the Soup Kitchen for Loaves and Fishes for many years. She enjoyed puzzle books and reading, especially the Bible. She was preceded in death by her husband Jacob DeYoung in 1998 and by a daughter Beverly Korstange in 2008 and a sister Frances Ball and a brother Jimmy Pelikan. Surviving are 2 sons, Donald DeYoung of Clayton, NC and David Barb DeYoung of Arvada, CO; 6 grandchildren, Staci Jim Emery, Jeffrey Misty DeYoung, Michael Cari DeYoung, Mindy Tom Ziganto, Scott Christen Korstange, and Michele Rob Wydeck; 9 great-grandchildren, Jamie, John, Kody, Sarah, Ryan, Sierra, Danielle, Amara, Liam, and great-great- granddaughter Jordan; 8 surviving brothers and sisters, Johnny Mary Pelikan, Tony Pelikan, Pauline Bob Bullis, Richard Delma Pelikan, Bobby Maryann Pelikan, Janet Cady, Mary Ellen Jones and Carol Bob Carr; several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 936 Lake St. with Msgr. Michael Hazard, Celebrant. Interment will follow at Mt. Ever-Rest Memorial Gardens South. Family and friends may gather for visitation at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick St. on Friday from 2-4 & 6-8 pm with a rosary to be recited at 7:30 pm. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Violet's memory be made to Kairos Dwelling or Loaves and Fishes.
