SMITH, Vernon V. Of Kalamazoo Passed away Thursday afternoon January 4, 2007. Vernon was born October 6, 1923 in Kalamazoo the son of Virgil and Jennie Kridler Smith and was a lifelong resident in the Kalamazoo area. He was a proud veteran serving in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Guadalcanal Campaign. Prior to his retirement in 1986 he was employed with Western Michigan University for over 20 years. Vernon was also a member of the Lion?s Club which he enjoyed very much. He also enjoyed traveling with the Lion?s to various events and gatherings along with fishing and the outdoors. He was preceded in death by a brother, Lawrence Smith; and his parents. Surviving are 2 daughters, Janet Noakes, Kathi DuBois; step-daughter, Cheryl Begg; 8 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Fern Akker, Vernice Robert Henson; sister-in-law, Doris Harold Dylhoff; nieces and nephews, Nancy Steinbach, Jerry Henson, Gregory Henson, and Charlyn Newton. Services will be held 11:00 o?clock Tuesday at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick with Rev. Sandra Elfring officiating. Interment will follow in East Cooper Cemetery. Friends may meet the family Monday from 2-4 and 6-8pm at the chapel. Memorials may be directed to Tendercare of Kalamazoo Nursing Home or Hospice of Greater Kalamazoo.
