Kalamazoo, MI Died Sunday afternoon November 2, 2008. Vernon was born August 12, 1932 in Kalamazoo, Michigan a son of the Rev. Henry and Mabel Wilmarth Cummings. During the Korean Conflict, he served with the U.S. Army. He had been a lifelong Kalamazoo area resident and was employed with American National Bank for 27 years, retiring in 1993. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #36; and the Eastwood Community Club. He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 brothers, Harold and Henry Cummings; and 3 sisters, Hazel, Ruth, and Eilene Cummings. On October 15, 1955, he was united in marriage to Patricia J. Bennett Cummings who survives. Also surviving, 3 sons, Kenneth Christine Cummings of Hopkins, MI, Donald Alica Cummings of Lawton, MI, and Douglas Julie Cummings of Portage, MI; 9 grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. A memorial service will be held 3 o'clock Thursday from the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick St. Friends may meet the family one hour prior to the service at the chapel. Private graveside services will be held in Fort Custer National Cemetery at a later date.
