Portage, MI Died March 1, 2008 at Heartland Health Center. He was born July 15, 1928 in Ludington to Roland and Elyda Nelson Benedict. He graduated from Ludington High School and Michigan State University. He was employed by City News Agency and was Vice President of Southern Michigan News until his retirement in 1990. During the Korean Conflict he was a member of the 5th Army Band. Music was his life and serving the arts community was his joy. He was the past president of Kalamazoo Community Concerts Association, a board member of the Kalamazoo Ballet Company and the Battle Creek Boy Choir and a founding member of The Milwood Church Fine Arts Program. He served on many other boards and committees throughout the area. He was an active member of the Milwood United Methodist Church for the past 50 years. Vern is survived by his wife of 52 years, Barbara Brown Benedict, children, Kristine Mark Snyder, Karrie Gregory Walz Benedict, Eric Laura Benedict, and by his sister, Alyce Irving Prescott, 6 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place. A service will be held at Milwood United Methodist Church, 1339 Portage Rd, Wednesday the 5th at 11:00am and the family will greet friends from 10:00am until time of service. Arrangements are by the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 E. Centre Ave., Portage. Memorials may be directed to Milwood United Methodist Church, Building Fund.
