Formerly of South Lyon, MI Tom died on Monday morning, April 9, 2012, in Battle Creek, MI. He was born December 13, 1926, in McHenry, KY, a son of Connie and Athel Ashby Baize. Tom served in the US Army Air Corps during World War II. After being discharged Tom moved to Detroit, met Lorraine Lapointe one day at work, and on July 1, 1950, Tom and Lorraine were married. Tom worked as a manager for Kroger and retired in August of 1989. He and Lorraine moved to Portage in 2001. Tom deeply loved his family and they were always his first priority. Spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren was his greatest joy. Tom was very particular about his cars and lawn. His cars were always cleaned inside and out he even polished the engine and he had the best looking yard in the neighborhood. Tom was preceded in death by: his parents; a brother, Ronnie Lee Baize; and a grandson, Glen Leadley. Surviving are: his wife of 61 years, Lorraine; three children, Jeanne Gary Leadley of Portage, Richard Deborah Baize of Galesburg and David Barbara Baize of Savannah, TX; seven grandchildren, Megan Jeff Brown, Carolyn Jack Van Dyke Leadley, Jason Nicole Baize, Jaimee Jeff Jones, Jenny Will Chufo, Christopher Angelina Baize and Lauren Baize; a brother, Chester Sue Baize; two sisters, Betty Flener and Ruby Mae Bolton; four sisters-in-law, Mary Charlie Wellman, Jeannine Schultz, Rita Larry Gray and Darlene Lapointe; and several nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held 11:00 Monday morning at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 South 9th Street, with Pastor James Dyke, officiating. Tom's family will receive guests beginning at 10:00. A graveside service with military honors will be held 2:00 Monday afternoon at Ft. Custer National Cemetery. Those wishing to attend the service should be in the cemetery's cortege area by 1:50 PM.
