Passed away Thursday, December 12, 2024, and the age of 77 with his family by his side. Thomas was born on December 17, 1946, in Lansing, Michigan, to the late John G and Frances (Barnett) Stimson. Tom played football for Ovid High school and loved helping his father on the family farm in Laingsburg, Michigan. After graduating from Owosso High School, Tom joined the United States Army, where he was trained as a Missile Maintenance Technician and studied electronics, computers and radio technology. He served his country proudly from 1967 through 1970 with an honorable discharge. After his time in the Army, he joined Kodak in Rochester NY as a Field Service Engineer servicing the 1st blood analyzing machine ever built in hospitals and medical institutions. He worked there from 1970 through 1989. He started his next endeavor in 1982 obtaining an FCC license so he could open his own communications equipment company, Mt Airy Communications, Inc. He sold and repaired communications equipment to Maryland state police as his largest customer, providing radio equipment and other communication devices for local police and first responders as well as other customers.
After retirement he moved from Fredrick, Maryland, to Cadillac, Michigan. He enjoyed walking his property, enjoying the wildlife and smelling the fresh air, with his trusted and loved dogs. He had many dogs through the years and loved each one unconditionally. He also enjoyed road trips and exploring Michigan including the Upper Peninsula. Sometimes with a friend or other times just he and his dog. Tom was always there to help a friend or newfound friend with a smile and a chuckle. He truly was a “people person”. A couple of his best friends were his neighbors, Dan and Kristy Prince. Tom loved getting the cookies and goodies Kristy would make him. Dan and he would go on rides just because one or the other needed to get out. Or one or the other would just walk across the street for a visit. Dan and Kristy were a Godsend to Tom and the family will always be forever thankful.
Home for Tom for the last 2 years has been Bickford of Portage. He learned to love it as much as he did the woods at his home where he wandered daily. Only now it was the halls of Bickford Tom found solace walking any time of the day or night. He made many friends there. The family will forever be grateful for the staff that cared for him.
Surviving Tom are his sisters, Susan (Bruce) Moorhead, his niece, Cathie Taylor (Robert and nephews Logan and Rowan), nephew Mitch, Maryanne Stimson, his niece Jenifer Stimson and her daughter Emily, and nephew Jason Houseman. Preceding him in passing are his parents, older brother John R and youngest sister Karen.
In accordance with his wishes, cremation will take place, and a graveside service will be held at Ft. Custer National Cemetery in the spring.
