MILLS, Theodore Allen, Jr.
of Kalamazoo Ted passed away Saturday January 9, 2010 at his home with his family around him. He was born February 1, 1931 in Kalamazoo, MI. His predecessors came to Southwest Michigan in the early 1800's. His parents were Theodore Allen Mills and Fern Laverne McNees. Prior to entering the military in 1951, where he served as a Marine during the Korean Conflict, he worked in the family owned Octagon Restaurant and Reliable Garbage Service. He married Joanne Elaine Clark on August 31, 1951. As a child, Ted grew up in the Oakwood neighborhood and was well known for the number of mischievous acts he and his friends were involved in. While Ted was known as a prankster he will be most remembered as a loving father to Michele Mills Ron Shuster and Leslie Mills-Brooks Ted Brooks. While working 14-hour days, there was not a school event or athletic event his daughter's were involved in that he did not attend. A quiet man when it came to his personal feelings, he showed his love to his wife and children by always being there. He also had a very special relationship with his grandson Christopher Lee Barnes and his wife Letizia Lirot Barnes and his granddaughter Jennifer Elizabeth Barnes Albertson and her husband Zachary Albertson. On July 22, 2006, Ted was honored by being his grandson's Best Man at his wedding. Ted was eagerly anticipating the birth of his first great grandchild from his granddaughter Jennifer. Ted was preceded in death by his brother Douglas Carter Mills and sister Joyce Mills Haas and his special friend Max, his faithful and loving dog. Besides his wife, children and grandchildren, Ted is survived by two nieces Linda White Sweet and Virginia Moffit Hartman, several great nieces and nephews, their children and his little dog Sophie.
