VAN SWEDEN, Mrs. Thelma S. Holden
Kalamazoo, MI Died Sunday evening November 20, 2011 and is now with her Lord and Savior. Thelma was born September 29, 1918 in Lawton, Michigan, daughter of William and Leah Tyler Holden. She married Marinus Rene VanSweden on Oct. 2, 1937; he preceded her in death in 1985. She was also preceded in death by her parents, sisters Myrtle Bertch, Metha Price, Frona Garske, and Wilma Allen. She is survived by a step-sister, Dorothy Jones, daughter, Donna Smith, son, Paul Cyndee; grandchildren Brenda Randy Orwig, Brian Smith, Leighann and Travis VanSweden; great-grandchildren Ryan, Lauren, Deanne Orwig, and Carter and Mallory Smith. Also surviving is sister-in-law, Dorothy Yeo and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Thelma was a hard worker, but enjoyed being busy. She was an active volunteer, involved with PTA, Borgess Renewed Hearts Club, and her favorite job was at the Salvation Army in the pantry, helping with warm coats, and being Santa's helper at Christmas time. She often said "she was working for the Lord and her reward would be in heaven". She loved everyone and rescued many animals, including her cat Happy. Services will be held 11 o'clock Wednesday from the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick St. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the chapel. Interment will be in Mt. Ever-Rest South Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Salvation Army or Upjohn Community Nursing Home.
