NICHOLAS, Sylvia May
Portage Sylvia May Houghtby Nicholas, 59, of Portage, MI, passed away on Sunday, August 19th. She was born on May 4, 1953, the daughter of Harlan and Phyllis Coons Houghtby, in Highland Park, MI. She was a 1971 graduate of Rochester High School and a 1974 graduate of Bronson Methodist School of Nursing, and earned her Bachelor's of Science in Nursing from Nazareth College in 1986. She dedicated her life to the constant service of others. From 1973 until 1976, she was an Ensign in the United States Navy. After completing her service to the country, she worked as a nurse at Borgess Hospital, Bronson Hospital, Upjohn and Gentiva Healthcare, and Tendercare Nursing Home of Portage. She was a longtime member of the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary. As a member of the Wileya�"Koon Post 475, she served as Post Commander, Chaplain, Adjutant, District Commander, and Zone Commander. She was a life member of the Girl Scouts of the USA and served as a Unit Manager, Troop Organizer, and Troop Leader, and was a longtime trainer of new leaders. A member of Pathfinder Portage First United Methodist Church for 22 years, she participated in the choir and bell choir, and served on the Parish Nursing Ministry. She was preceded in death by her mother, Phyllis Houghtby, and her beloved husband, David Nicholas. She is survived by her father, Harlan Houghtby, sisters Delphine Hogston and Rev. Dr. Natalie Houghtby-Haddon, brother Dennis Houghtby, children Dr. Christopher Collette Nicholas, Heather Nicholas, and Thomas Laura Nicholas, and granddaughter, Eleanor Phyllis Nicholas. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 2-4pm and 6-8pm at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 South 9th St. A funeral will be held on Thursday at 11:00 AM at Pathfinder Portage First United Methodist Church, 8740 South Westnedge Ave. Friends may meet the family one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be directed to the Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan Council, American Legion Wiley-Koon Post 475, or the music fund at Pathfinder Church.
