Sylvia Lee Carter-Kennon

August 1, 1943 — February 4, 2025

Kalamazoo

Mrs. Sylvia (Carter) Kennon passed away unexpectedly on February 4, 2025. Mrs. Kennon was born on August 1, 1943, in Hope Arkansas, to the late James A. and Ida Mae (Brewer) Carter.

Mrs. Sylvia Kennon was the epitome of a strong black woman. Her character, determination and love were never more evident than her insistence on raising her six children on her own. With courage, commitment and minimal support, her desire to keep her family together, no matter what, never wavered. Mrs. Sylvia’s strength, humor, quick-wit and resilient character lead her grandchildren, and some adults, to call her “Super Granny” a very fitting title.

Throughout her life Mrs. Sylvia had various jobs and attended college for nursing, prior to becoming disabled. Nevertheless, she enjoyed being with her family, sewing, macrame, reupholstering furniture and traveling. She was united in marriage to the late Army veteran Jeffrey Kennon in Kalamazoo Michigan. She was a church mother at Greater Joy (COGIC) and an honorary member of the order of the Eastern Star.

Mrs. Sylvia Kennon was preceded in death by her husband, parents, stepmother Beatrice Carter, sons Timmie Wayne and Randolf Lee, five brothers LC Williams, Burnett, Richard, Robert and Tom Carter, and stepsister Catherine Stacy.

She leaves to cherish her memories three daughters, Patrica Ann (Horace) Lattimore of Muskegon MI, Tamarro Malina (Michael) Harrold of Kalamazoo MI, and Addie Bell Carter; two sons Minion aka Michael Charles and Horace Van Chilton Carter of Kalamazoo MI; two brothers Frank and Jerry Carter of Kalamazoo; three sisters Margret Weatherspoon ( Kalamazoo, MI), Hattie Hoskins (Lansing, MI), and Dorthy Young; sisters in law Janet Carter and Geraldene (Dena) Carter, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Mrs. Sylvia Kennon lived to see five generations, and she will be greatly missed.

A wake for Mrs. Sylvia will be held at Langeland Family Funeral Home 622 S. Burdick St. Kalamazoo, MI 49007 on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, from 5-8 PM. A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, February 13, 2025, at Galilee Baptist Church 1216 N. Westnedge Ave. Kalamazoo, MI 49007 with Pastor Jeff Townsend officiating. There will be a family hour from 10-11 AM, a funeral at 11 AM, and a 2 PM committal service at Ft. Custer National Cemetery 15501 Dickman Rd. Augusta, MI 49012. A repass will follow the burial at Galilee Baptist Church.
