Age 70, passed into the loving arms of his Savior on Sunday, May 5, 2024.
Steve was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan, on November 19, 1953, the son of the late Harold E. and Reanetta J. (Klepper) DeYoung.
He graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School and earned his bachelor’s degree from Western Michigan University. Steve worked as an accountant and controller for several businesses over the years. He loved music, singing in choirs, duets with his sister, Beth, and playing bass guitar for the praise team at Westwood Christian Reformed Church, The Singing Crusaders, and other special programs. His love of sound engineering brought joy to him and his wife, Ruth, as the two worked on many programs for Kalamazoo Christian Schools, the highlight being the musical “Joseph”.
Besides his parents, Steve was preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ken and Jessie Lemmer, and brother-in-law, Dave Lemmer. He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 48 years, Ruth (Lemmer) DeYoung; sons, Nicholas and Zachary DeYoung; granddaughter, Morgan DeYoung; brothers, David (Elaine) and Phil (Betty) DeYoung; sister, Elizabeth (Tony) LaRoma; in-laws, Bob (Deb) Lemmer, Joel (Annie) Lemmer, Norma (Tom) Kloosterman, Jim (Suzy) Lemmer, Deb Lemmer, and Helen Lemmer; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Some of Steve’s most cherished memories included spending time at his family cottage on Portage Lake, coaching his sons’ soccer teams, playing board games, and camping with family.
A memorial service will be held Friday, May 10, 2024, at 12:00 PM at Westwood Christian Reformed Church, 620 Northampton Rd., Kalamazoo, MI 49006, with Pastor Mike Koetje officiating. Visitation will take place at the church, one hour prior to the service, beginning at 11:00 AM. Private interment will be at Riverside Cemetery in Kalamazoo.
