ADDISON, Stayton D.
formerly of Kalamazoo Stayton died peacefully, Friday, July 13, 2012 at home in Katy, Texas. He was born May 13, 1935 in Toledo, Ohio, the 4th of 6 children, to the late John Nelson and Florence Smith Addison of Petersburg, MI. He attended Roosevelt High School in Ypsilanti, Michigan and graduated from the Michigan State University School of Hospitality Business. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, stationed in Europe. In his career, he worked in hotels in Pittsburgh, PA, The Royal Hawaiian Resort in Honolulu & the Sheraton Maui in Hawaii plus hotels in Chicago, IL and Columbus, OH. Stayton was Vice President & General Manager of Callaway Gardens Resort in Pine Mountain, GA. He was President of the Flagler System and General Manager of The Breakers in Palm Beach, FL. In 2000, he retired in Greenbrae, CA as President of the Tamalpias Hotels and Drake Landing Hotels, Inc. Stayton was active in many hotel & community organizations. He had been President of the Ohio Hotel & Motel Association, the Georgia Hotel & Motel Association, and the Florida Hotel & Motel Association. Stayton was a member of the American Hotel & Lodging Association and of the Resort Committee. He was also, a member of the Tavern Club. In Florida, he was active in the Palm Beach Economic Council, the Palm Beach Chamber of Commerce and the Palm Beach United Way. In 1985, he was selected as Florida's Hotelier of the Year and in 1986, he was selected as the Resort Hotelier of the year with AH&LA organization. Stayton was joined in marriage with his wife, Joan Kohrman Addison, of 53 years, on September 4, 1959 in Kalamazoo, MI. He is survived by his wife, Joan and his children, Stayton "Skip"Katie Addison, Jr. of Atlanta, GA and Rodger Julie Addison of Houston, TX; 4 grandchildren, John Patrick "JP", Rebecca "Becca", Caroline and James Addison; brothers, Curt Carol Addison, Dick Mary Jane Addison and Rev. Larry Cindy Addison; and several nieces and nephews. Also preceding Stayton in death was a sister, Ruth Luella Addison in 1931 and a brother and sister-in-law, William Anne Addison. A memorial service will take place Saturday, July 28, 2012, 11:00 o'clock at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 S. 9th Sreet. A private internment will take place at Genesee Prairie Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Pancreatic Cancer Action Network
