Portage Passed away Thursday, April 14, 2011. Shirel was born December 1, 1937 in Ezel, KY, the son of Wendell L. and Maggie Havens Stamper and had lived in the Kalamazoo area for several years. He had worked for Mead Paper Company for 16 years and the Eaton Company for 27 years. On May 3, 1980 he married Sharon La Vere, who survives. Shirel is also survived by his daughters, Roxanne Underwood of Vicksburg, Shirel Stamper Jim Hart of Mendon and a son, Jimmy Cari Smith, Galesburg; step-children, Debi Ken Popp of Portage, Teresa Jim Trayers of Portage and Shannon Emmons of Kalamazoo; 14 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; brothers, Ole Ann Stamper and Wendell Jeannie Stamper; a sister, Mattie Pete Gafkie; half-sister, Ladell Leach; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Hershel Stamper. The family will receive friends at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick St., on Wednesday beginning at 12:00 PM followed by a memorial service at 1:00 PM with Pastor Lon Bouma officiating.
