Of Kalamazoo, MI Passed away Thursday afternoon, October 9, 2008 at his home. He was born May 4, 1927 in Vredenburgh, AL, the son of Sherry Sr. and Idell Morrow Brooks. Jack was a veteran of the United States Navy in the South Pacific serving during World War II and the United States Army serving during the Korean Conflict. He was employed by Oven Fresh now Sara Lee Bakery Group, Inc., as a route salesman, for 35 years until his retirement in 1990. During his retirement, Jack worked at Hardings Friendly Market on West Main St. in Kalamazoo for 17 years as a greeter. Jack was a member of Stockbridge Ave. United Methodist Church. On June 14, 1952, he was united in marriage to Charlene Dennis in Allegan, who survives. Also surviving are 3 children, Jackie Michael Johnson, John Terri Brooks, and Scott Laurie Barrons Brooks all of Kalamazoo; 7 grandchildren, Jason Becky Johnson, Kevin Krystin Johnson, Holly fiancé Chris Rogenski Johnson, Courtney Brooks, Nathan fiancée Samantha Cole Brooks, Jenny Brooks, and Brittany Brooks; 5 great-grandchildren; 1 brother, Levon Laura Brooks, of Indianapolis, IN; 1 brother-in-law, Jim Winnie Dennis of Otsego; and many nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents; 1 grandson, Robby Brooks; 1 brother; and 1 sister. Memorial services for Jack will be at 11:00 AM on Monday at Stockbridge Ave. United Methodist Church, 1009 Stockbridge Ave., with Pastor Ron Slager officiating. There will be no visitation. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be directed to Stockbridge Ave. United Methodist Church, West Michigan District United Methodist Church - Lake Michigan Camp, or VA Medical Center - Ann Arbor.
