Sally Matheson Rathburn

Our beloved wife, mother and grandmother Sally Rathburn passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on December 10, 2024, after a short courageous battle of cancer.

Sally was the heart and soul of her family, and she will be dearly missed.

Sally was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan to Viva and Richard Matheson on July 9,1940. She went to high school at Grand Rapids Central and graduated in 1958. She went on to Grand Rapids Community College for a year before becoming a wife and mother.

Sally worked at the family business Rathco Safety Supply for 45 years. Sally oversaw the bookkeeping and running the front office.

Sally enjoyed reading, knitting, needlepoint, tennis, and bridge. 

Sally is survived by her husband of 65-years, Roger R. Rathburn of Portage, Michigan. Her son Russell M. Rathburn (Penny), her daughter Robyn R. Orner (Dan), her sister Marjorie Vandermolen (Richard), 11 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren.

Sally is preceded in death by her parents Richard and Viva Matheson, her sons Richard M. Rathburn (Marcy), and Roger “Rocky” Rathburn (Sue).

At Sally’s request, there will be no services, but before she passed, she made it known she wanted us to all share a laugh and raise a glass of Chardonnay in celebration of her journey home.
