of Portage, Michigan Died April 27, 2013. Penny was born November 13, 1927 in Cincinnati, OH to the late Robert and Dolly Fair Singleton. She was united in marriage to James C. Barnes on August 7, 1948. He preceded her in death in January of 2001. A registered nurse, Penny was proud to have served the American Red Cross as a volunteer for many years. Her varied interests in life included Bridge, reading, word puzzles, dancing and knitting, but more than anything, she loved caring for her family. Penny is survived by her children, J. Rodney Judy Barnes of Southlake, TX and Sue Ellen Paul Verschoof of Kalamazoo; grandchildren, Kristin, Meghan, Michal, Claire, Olivia and Seth; her beloved great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Penny is also preceded in death by her grandson, Adam; and sisters, Wilma Brown and Hazel Winn. There will be a private interment at Fort Custer National Cemetery. Arrangements by the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 East Centre Ave. In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to Parkinson's Disease Support Group, Bronson Athletic Club, 6789 Elm Valley Drive Kalamazoo, Michigan 49009 or to the American Red Cross.
