Russell H. Tiller, Sr., age 96, of Kalamazoo, Michigan, entered through Heaven’s gates to the glory of paradise and the arms of Jesus on July 27, 2024. Russell was born in Bloomfield, Missouri, on August 25, 1927, the son of Lowell and Ruth (O’Connor) Tiller.
Russell was a long-time member of Winchell Avenue Church (Disciples of Christ) and served in many capacities, including Elder and Moderator. He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II and was honorably discharged when the war ended.
Russell was proud to be employed as a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service for over 30 years. He loved his job, his patrons, and those he worked with. In retirement, he worked on his golf game and enjoyed league play, especially with his brother, Leo. He also spent many hours in daily devotionals and studying scripture; yet he always found time to help his family, his church, a neighbor, or a friend.
Russell married the love of his life, Vergia Lee Gillespie, on December 29, 1948. They spent the next 74 plus years together in the Parchment area until her death in 2023. He was a dedicated husband and father and was loved dearly by his family.
Russell is survived by his children, Russell (Sara) Tiller, Jr., Vicki (Donald) Crosse, and Debra (Timothy) Bickings; grandchildren, Eric (Amber) Tiller, Keith Tiller, Melissa Crosse, Nicholas (Kelsey) Crosse, Brent (Kayla) Bickings, Michael (Deena) Crosse, Kevin (Madeline) Bickings, Megan (Andrew) Weinberg; nine great-grandchildren; beloved siblings, Deloris (Bruce) Culver, Theresa VandenBerg, and Leo (Sande) Tiller; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to his wife, Russell was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Dale VandenBerg.
A Memorial Service will take place at Langeland Family Funeral Homes Burial and Cremation Services, 3926 S 9th St, Kalamazoo, MI 49009, on Monday, August 12, beginning at 1:00 pm with Chaplain Greg Carlson officiating, and a visitation to follow until 4:00 pm.
