VANDER MEER, Roy
Of Kalamazoo Joined his wife Amelia in Heaven, Tuesday morning, September 25, 2012. Roy was born January 16, 1921 in Grand Rapids, MI the son of the late Jacob and Reintje Dik VanderMeer. He was a World War II veteran serving in the U.S. Navy from 1942-1945 on the USS Catskill. He participated in the invasion of the Philippine Islands and Okinowa. His ship was awarded 5 bronze stars for their service. Prior to his retirement he was employed for 36 years with Master Craft Corporation. Roy was an active member of Hope Reformed Church, where he served as Sunday School Superintendant. He enjoyed taking walks, hunting, fishing, and spending vacations with his children and grandchildren up north. On July 1, 1947 he was united in marriage to his loving wife, the former Amelia Staple, who preceded him in death on March 11, 1987. He was also preceded in death by a brother and 2 sisters, Garrett VanderMeer, Gladys Sikkema, and Margaret Hollander. Surviving are his children, Donald Sue VanderMeer, Mary Gary Nap, Marvin Kim VanderMeer; 9 grandchildren, Amy, Todd, Allison, Julie, Becky, Brandyn, Amelia, Matt, and John; 5 great-grandchildren, Jared, Jordyn, Jakob, Ezekiel, and Rylin; brother, Jay VanderMeer; in-laws, Jo Dutch Mejeur, Mary Kornoelje; and several nieces and nephews. The family deeply appreciates the 7 years of caregiving at Park Village Pines, Crystal Woods and Oakland Centre Adult Day Services. Services will be held at 11:00am Thursday at Hope Reformed Church, 910 Jenks Blvd, with pastor Kent Frens officiating. Friends may meet the family Wednesday from 4-8pm at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 South 9th Street and one hour prior to the service at the church. Private interment will be in Riverside Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Hope Reformed Church.
